Coaching in business can be immensely rewarding. You have the opportunity to make a huge impact on a company, its people, its vision, its goals, and its values. You can transform a dysfunctional business into an industry leader.
But coaching in business isn’t easy. You have to be bold, tough, and straightforward. You have to be able to tell a business owner the truth, no matter how much it hurts. In fact, coaching in business sometimes has a destabilizing effect in the beginning, which can actually be the best thing to happen to a company. It is the coach’s job to shake things up, to make an impact, and to put the situation into perspective.
One of the many important aspects of coaching in business is to point out strengths as well as weaknesses. Build on the strengths and create a plan of attack to improve the weaknesses. A struggling business owner often focuses solely on the weaknesses, forgetting that his strengths are what put him in business in the first place. It’s the coach’s role to impact the business owner’s way of thinking about the business and to provoke change.
To truly make a difference you must have a coach’s mindset. An effective business coach:
- Has a clear vision: He believes in himself and in what he’s working to achieve
- Is creative: He approaches problems in new ways and challenges businesses to take the leap forward with him
- Is optimistic: He always sees the glass as half full and his positivity is infectious
- Has guts: He has the courage of his convictions to tell it like it is, whether or not the business owner wants to hear it
- Is tenacious: He never quits and convinces the business to believe in itself
- Is focused: He is doggedly determined to make a positive impact on the business
- Is always thinking: He’s constantly dreaming up new ways to push the business forward, even if his ideas may seem unconventional at first
If you have the right mindset and are determined to make a huge impact, you will almost always be a driving force for change that helps the business grow. Be creative. Be bold. Be an artist. Be a coach!
